EUFORGEN is a collaborative programme among European countries to promote conservation and sustainable use of forest genetic resources. It serves as a platform for pan-European collaboration in this area, bringing together scientists, managers, policy-makers and other stakeholders.
EUFORGEN facilitates development of science-based strategies, methods and recommendations for policy-makers and managers to improve the management of genetic resources of forest trees in Europe. It also contributes to various initiatives and projects making available better information on forest genetic resources in Europe.
EUFORGEN was established in October 1994 as an implementation mechanism of Strasbourg Resolution S2 (Conservation of forest genetic resources) of the first Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE), held in France in 1990. The Programme also contributes to implementation of other MCPFE commitments on forest genetic resources and relevant decisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
The EUFORGEN activities are funded by participating countries and carried out through working groups and networks. The EUFORGEN Steering Committee is composed of National Coordinators from all member countries and it has the overall responsibility of the Programme. The EUFORGEN Secretariat is hosted by Bioversity International.
The EUFORGEN Programme is coordinated by Bioversity International.
Bioversity is the operating name of the
International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI)
and the International Network for Improvement of Banana and Plantain (INIBAP).
