Management of forest genetic resources in Spain

Spain has approved a National Strategy for the conservation and sustainable use of Forest genetic resources (MIMAM, 2006). Since 1988 there is a National Committee on Forest Genetic Resources (NCFGR) which involves central and regional administrations, and with the collaboration of research centres. An advisory group, including NGOS and other sectors involved in FGR conservation was established after the approval of the National Strategy. The NCFGR has approved three National Plans (Conservation of Genetic Resources, Breeding, Conservation of Endangered populations and Evaluation of Genetic Resources).
The main activities involving the National strategy are:

• Creation of Germplasm Bank (Network) for the Conservation of Forest Genetic Resources. This Germplasm Bank is coordinated by the “El Serranillo” National Centre of Forest Genetic Resources depending on the Ministry of Environment.
• National Register of Conservation Units.
• Dissemination and training.
