Management of forest genetic resources in The Netherlands

The genetic conservation of forest trees in The Netherlands started as a side activity of several selection and tree breeding projects in the Dutch Forest Research Institute “De Dorschkamp” in Wageningen in 1947.Genebanks were established for poplar, willow and elm, in order to supply the breeding programs with a variety of genetic material.

Today the responsibility for the conservation of FGR is a combined effort of the Centre for Genetic Resources Netherlands (CGN) and the State Forest Service (SBB). This cooperation resulted in the establishment of a genebank of trees and shrubs on State Forest land, near Dronten, in 2006. The CGN is financed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs under a five-year contract also covering national activities on the conservation and utilization of plant and animal genetic resources for food and agriculture.

    Further information

The National Program on Conservation and Sustainable use of Genetic Diversity can be found in the policy document of the Dutch Government 'Sources of Existence  [3]' with data from 2002, covers agricultural plants and animals in addition to forestry issues.
