EUFORGEN Webinars

The EUFORGEN webinar series aims to provide a forum for discussion on the most burning and cutting-edge themes in forest genetic resources and forest science. The series addresses a wide range of topics, including the analysis of how climate events affect genetic diversity and forest resilience, as well as the opportunities and challenges presented by genetic research for sustainable forest management practices and ecosystem protection.

The webinars explore the issues currently being discussed in the European green agenda and beyond, bringing together experts, scientists, practitioners and members of the general public interested in the environment and its conservation.

Webinars - 6 & 7 November 2025

The November 2025 EUFORGEN–OptFORESTS webinar series examined how genetic decline can be detected in forest populations and how this knowledge can support management, breeding and conservation. Across two online sessions, participants explored early warning signs of declining genetic diversity and discussed practical responses to strengthen long-term forest resilience.

The first session focused on theory and indicators. Alicia Mastretta-Yanes (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew) presented work on developing genetic indicators for biodiversity monitoring, while Geir Bolstad (NINA) showed how introgression monitoring in wild salmon can guide approaches in other species. Ophélie Ronce (Institute of Evolutionary Science of Montpellier) discussed assisted gene flow and the importance of timing and local adaptation. A concluding discussion, chaired by François Lefèvre (INRAE and OptFORESTS), highlighted the need to balance scientific thresholds with societal values.

The second session turned to management and conservation practice. Marjana Westergren (Slovenian Forestry Institute and OptFORESTS) presented research on natural selection and key adaptive traits in several species. Arne Steffenrem (NIBIO and the Norwegian Seed Centre) outlined Norway’s climate smart breeding strategy, and Jan-Peter George (LUKE) explained how ex situ conservation tools, including cryo-storage, complement dynamic approaches. The session ended with reflections from Erik Dahl Kjær (University of Copenhagen and OptFORESTS) on the importance of cooperation between researchers, managers and policymakers.
