LIFE RECLOAK targets decline of Mediterranean holm oak forests
EU-funded LIFE RECLOAK will restore holm oak forests across southern Europe, using resilient native seedlings and new monitoring tools to combat disease, drought, and biodiversity loss over five years project.
Mediterranean holm oak forests are under growing pressure from climate change, prolonged droughts and the spread of Phytophthora cinnamomi, a pathogen linked to widespread tree decline. The LIFE RECLOAK project aims to reverse this trend through coordinated restoration, science-led planting, and long-term monitoring.
Running from October 2025 to September 2030, LIFE RECLOAK focuses on habitat 9340, “Forests of Quercus ilex and Quercus rotundifolia”, a cornerstone of Mediterranean ecosystems. Restoration actions will be carried out at five pilot sites in Italy, Spain, and Malta, selected to reflect different environmental and climatic conditions.
Central to the project is the use of native holm oak seedlings specifically selected for drought tolerance and resistance to Phytophthora cinnamomi. By combining genetic selection, improved nursery practices and field testing, the project seeks to boost survival rates by up to 25 % and significantly increase vegetation cover.
LIFE RECLOAK also aims to deliver measurable climate and ecological benefits. Expected results include a 20 to 40 % rise in carbon sequestration within three years, improved soil quality through reduced erosion and higher organic matter, and enhanced biodiversity, particularly in soils. In addition, researchers will develop new biological indicators and monitoring models to assess forest health, carbon dynamics, and water balance under climate stress.
Beyond the field, LIFE RECLOAK places strong emphasis on knowledge transfer, producing operational guidelines, training activities, and outreach materials to support replication across the Mediterranean.
The project is coordinated by Italy’s National Research Council (CNR) and brings together universities, forest agencies, nurseries, and NGOs from four countries, underlining the scale and urgency of protecting Mediterranean holm oak forests.
Updates and the latest news about the project are available in Italian on the LIFE RECLOAK Facebook page.
