Published: 28/04/2025

EUFORGEN’s 30-year journey is captured in a new animated video, highlighting milestones, collaborations, and strategies that have supported the conservation and sustainable use of forest genetic resources in Europe.

The European Forest Genetic Resources Programme (EUFORGEN) is celebrating three decades of collaboration, innovation and impact with the launch of a new animated video highlighting the programme’s achievements.

The video provides an overview of EUFORGEN’s major milestones, from its founding in 1994 to its recognised leadership today. It showcases achievements such as the development of technical guidelines for forest tree species, the creation of the EUFGIS information system, the adoption of Forest Genetic Resources monitoring indicators, and the launch of the Forest Genetic Resources Strategy for Europe, among many other success stories.

EUFORGEN’s support to experts, practitioners and policymakers has contributed significantly to strengthening the resilience of forests across Europe. In 2024, this contribution was recognised at the 9th Forest Europe Ministerial Conference, further confirming EUFORGEN’s vital role in enhancing forest resilience through the conservation of forest genetic resources.

Throughout its various phases, EUFORGEN has worked with 41 European countries and continues to lead efforts to conserve the genetic resources of Europe’s forests. The new video reflects on the programme’s legacy and its ongoing commitment to ensuring that forests remain resilient, adaptable and healthy for future generations.
