Germany launches national strategy on genetic resources to tackle climate and biodiversity crises
Germany's new strategy promotes the conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources to ensure resilient, climate-adapted food systems and strengthen biodiversity, research, and international cooperation.
Germany’s Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity (BMLEH) has released a National Strategy on Genetic Resources for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, reinforcing the country's commitment to biodiversity and food security in the face of climate change.
The strategy aims to secure the long-term conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources, including crops, livestock, forest species, and aquatic biodiversity, as key building blocks for resilient and climate-adapted food systems. It highlights actions such as strengthening gene banks, boosting breeding research, and fostering international cooperation.
The strategy stresses the urgent need for diverse, climate-resilient production systems and calls for coordinated efforts among federal and state authorities, researchers, farmers, and consumers.
