The State of Europe’s Forests 2025 report (SoEF 2025) provides a comprehensive overview of the condition, management, and use of forest resources across Europe.  An important contribution is Indicator 4.6, which reflects the conservation status of forest genetic resources in Europe, based on data submitted directly by European countries through EUFORGEN.

As the flagship report of the FOREST EUROPE process, SoEF 2025 serves as a key reference for policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders, supporting informed decision-making and strengthening the science–policy interface in a rapidly changing environmental and socio-economic context.

The SoEF 2025 is a common activity of the FOREST EUROPE signatories, their monitoring and statistical experts, and a joint pan-European data collection of FOREST EUROPE, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This collaborative framework ensures both the robustness and comparability of data at the pan-European level and contributes directly to FOREST EUROPE’s ongoing commitment to strengthening monitoring, reporting and assessment of sustainable forest management in Europe. The SoEF 2025 is prepared by the European Forest Institute (EFI).

Indicator 4.6

Especially for biodiversity and genetic conservation, one indicator stands out: Indicator 4.6 on forest genetic resources. This indicator assesses the conservation status of forest genetic resources in Europe, covering in situ (native and non-native species) and ex situ conservation, and Forest Reproductive Material (FRM). Instead of simply counting hectares, it evaluates the genetic diversity conserved across species and countries, using verifiers on dynamic conservation effort, species diversity, ecozones diversity, and insurance.

Indicator 4.6 is a result of the direct involvement of European countries. The EUFORGEN National Coordinators (in collaboration with the EUFGIS National Focal Points) submit their data through EUFORGEN in a coordinated data collection. In this way, the results presented are harmonised and allow a precise assessment of the conservation status for all forest tree species in Europe.
